The Process of Buying a Used Trumpet

By: James Loope

There are several reasons why a student should buy a used trumpet over new.  A series of questions need to be considered by the student.  For example, is the trumpet the right instrument for the student?  How serious of a musician will the student be?  These are important questions to gauge whether or not a used trumpet should be purchased.
Is the Trumpet the right instrument?
Individual brass instruments are not only a personal choice, but a physical choice. Sometimes after a student has chosen an instrument for musical study, the student comes to find that their physical facial features are not appropriate for the facial embosser required to play that particular instrument. It is very common for trumpet players to become trombone players and trombone players to become tuba players. Furthermore, it is not uncommon for a young student to decide all together that they do not have the concentration or will to focus on the study of music.
The Serious Musician
Students all start on less expensive "student horns" that are used to identify whether a student will move forward with becoming a more serious musician. If it is the case, that a student becomes more serious, the student will want to upgrade to a higher quality instrument to compliment their accelerating talent and ability.
Trumpet Resell
Trumpets that are purchased used can often be resold for the same value, slightly less value, or in some case more than the original purchase prices. This means very little risk in investment. However, the student who purchased the brand new beginner trumpet will most likely take a 20 to 50% loss in the sale of the student horn. Brass instruments typically hold their value; however, there is a large supply of beginner horns on the market (due to students quitting or upgrading). There is not a huge market for overpriced used horns.

How to Buy a Used Trumpet

Now that it has been determined that the student needs to purchase a used trumpet, there are some tips to keep in mind when purchasing.  Here are five tips to help you purchase a used trumpet:

1) Perform a quick Google search to identify the cost of a new trumpet of the same brand and model. The model and brand you choose will mostly depend whether your student or a professional musician.
2) Compare the price of the used trumpet and its stated condition to identify whether it is priced correctly.
3) Verify the condition of the trumpet. When was the trumpet last cleaned? Was it cleaned before storage? Do the valves and slides function? Any dents?
4) Identify whether or not the seller is a professional music reseller? Parents of students who "used" to play trumpet will most likely not be aware of the full functioning condition of the instrument. Furthermore, parents often put horns into storage without cleaning before storage. If not properly maintained and cleaned, brass instruments (i.e. trumpets) can corrode due to acids from the mouth. Any serious student or professional reseller will have properly cleaned the horn to prevent corrosion.
5) Quality Brands are Conn, King, Bach, and Yamaha. Be wary of other brands, if the horn is intended to be a serious instrument.

Hopefully these questions and tips will help aid you in the buying process of a used trumpet.
