Food Apartheid

By: Robert Thomson

Residents of L.A. may have a more difficult time obtaining fast food in their future. No more nagging about diet and exercise, the city council has given up on taking that route. Now they’re just flat out banning the sale of fast food to its poorer citizens. The mayor still hasn’t signed the ordinance but will be doing so soon since it passed unanimously.

Doesn’t every American citizen have the right to a dollar menu? I see this as an awakening for our country. I understand this ordinance is to cut down on bad health and obesity but come on. Not all poor people are obese and not all obese people are poor. I wonder if this logic ever came into play with the city council. Sure, it doesn’t affect them; they’re not poor. My message to them is this: walk around for two days without your plastic and/or green. Only eat at home but take half of the food from your cabinets. This is what life is like for your poorer citizens and you’re making it more difficult by taking away an assumed luxury you think they can’t afford.

Oh and you’re next future, A-list, movie star is out there somewhere in your great city. They’re also probably a starving artist, literally, which makes them one of your poorer citizens. I think you just discriminated against your own future, Los Angeles. On one hand you have lost your next big star and on the other when that star finally gets noticed they’ll be paying you back with the same treatment. You should probably go ahead and kiss the next generation of your industry goodbye because they’ll be heading for Broadway where the dollar menu really does exist and not just for the rich.
