Throughout history scam artists have been coming up with ways to part you and your money. They can be as clever as a fox and usually a person will not know they have been the victim of a scam until it is much too late to do a single thing about it. They can take you for a little or a lot. It will all depend on how brave they are and how stupid or gullible you are. Today is no different than any other time in history except for the fact that the electronic age we live in can make it even easier for a scam artists to get at your money. With the single act of giving out your social security number, your credit card number, or your bank account number to the wrong individual or even entering one of these numbers on an non secure place on the internet, you will be opening your self up to become the prey of scam artists and thieves. There are several ways they have contrived to take your money and have you willingly give it to them at the same time. Check cashing scams are one of the most popular, but should be the easiest to see through. When someone calls or sends you a letter saying that you have won a lottery or sweepstakes for thousands of dollars or more, but first you must send them a check for a certain amount to process the winnings, you should immediately see a red flag. You would be amazed at the number of people that have fallen for this trick. If you had really won a huge sum of money, why could they not just deduct the fee from your winnings? People can get really stupid if they think that they will be getting a lot of free cash. Email scams are another way thieves are finding pigeons to help them line their pockets. The emails will seemingly be and sometimes really are from individuals from other countries asking for help in a sad situation and it usually involves them sending money to your banking account. Of course this is just a rouse to get your banking information. They promise a substantial payment to you for being so kind in helping them. They will help someone, but it will not be you. Some scam artists will even be brave enough to call you on the telephone and pitch you some unbelievable offer. These are usually very nice sounding people who talk smoothly and are very convincing. They sometimes prey on the elderly because they think they are more easily fooled for some reason, but the elderly are catching on quickly. If you want to protect your money and your credit, you need to beware of any offer that even remotely sounds too good to be true because the fact is if it sounds too good to be true it is more than likely a scam.
