The MTV Video Music Awards seem to have hosted some of the most shocking moments in music over the years. The latest, though, seemed to fall into the abhorrent category as much as the shocking one. The moment happened when country sweetheart Taylor Swift won the award for Best Female Video. Taylor came on stage to accept her award and thank her fans, but in the middle of her acceptance speech, rapper Kanye West barged his way onto the stage, took the mic from Taylor and started talking about how he thought Beyonce should have won the award instead. His comments were met with boos, and he also spoke too soon as Beyonce ended up winning the VMA for Video of the Year. Showing her class in contrast with Kanye's lack thereof, Beyonce used her win as an opportunity to bring Swift back on stage to finish her thank yous.
As soon as the show wrapped up, celebrities around the scene started condemning Kanye's action. One of the best comments came from former American Idol Kelly Clarkson. Clarkson wrote a long letter on her webpage directed at Kanye, part of which reads, "Dear Kanye, What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we're all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like s***... The best part of this evening is that you weren't even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a moon man that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really?? I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her...so why can't you be??"
Clarkson also praised Beyonce for her actions at the VMAs. She wasn't the only celebrity who had some harsh words for West. Everyone from Pink to Joel Madden and (Idol alum) Adam Lambert spoke out against his actions. In an even more surprising twist of events, President Barack Obama apparently even heard about the outburst. During a sound check for an interview, a time that is supposed to be "off the record," the President was heard calling West a "jacka**." Ironic, considering one of Kanye's other famous outbursts was when he criticized Obama's predecessor, President Bush, for not caring about black people.
Kelly Clarkson was shot into the national spotlight back in 2002 when she became the first person to win American Idol. She released her first album, Thankful, soon after, which produced singles like "A Moment Like This," "Miss Independent" and "Low." Since then, she has come out from under the control of Idol and has released the albums Breakaway, My December and her most recent, 2009's All I Ever Wanted. She has also found many more single hits with songs like "Since U Been Gone," "Because of You," "Never Again" and "My Life Would Suck Without You."
