It's a night she'll never forget, and in many ways she may want to. During her first (and country's first) VMA award acceptance speech, Taylor Swift was interrupted by a powerful figure Sunday, September 13th during the live taping of the MTV Video Music Awards, causing a stir during the award show as well as a media frenzy for both acts. Kanye West, a often vocal performer who has had several media run-ins, left fans stunned across the globe on Sunday night when he took the microphone away from the poised yet shocked Swift saying "I'm really happy for you, I'm gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time."
Though the teary eyed country star wasn't able to finish her acceptance speech, as MTV quickly cut to a taped video, the winner of the Best Female Video had to put herself together immediately as she was set to make a live performance of that award winning hit "You Belong to Me" just moments later. The event caused an outpouring of both celebrity and media reaction, as stars Tweeted all night in support of Taylor and in disgust of the rapper. Not long after, MTV security guards escorted the rapper out of Radio City Music Hall where stars were booing him inside the theatre. Since, Taylor Swift tickets have seen a surge online, even without a tour set for the near future.
Keeping her cool wasn't easy for the 19 year old, who admitted in several interviews after the event that she was in shock. Talking to the ladies on the View, she recapped her feelings on the evening, going from shock that she won to shock that Kanye was on stage with her. "Wow, I can't believe I won...this is awesome...don't trip and fall...I'm gonna get to thank the fans, this is so cool...oh, Kanye West is here...cool haircut...what are you doing here? Then, ouch. And then, I guess I'm not gonna get to thank the fans." Still, with the outpouring of support from fans like Pink, Katy Perry and others, Swift still felt like the evening finished on a high note. "I don't want to start anything," she said after the show that evening. "I had a great day tonight. I've been sent so many text messages and everyone's been really nice. I've had a really, really fun night."
What might have put in a better mood was her return to the stage following Beyonce's win for Best Video of the Year, in which the R&B singer asked Taylor to come back on stage for a real acceptance speech, recalling her first VMA award with Destiny's Child. "I remember being 17 years old, up for my first MTV Award with Destiny's Child and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life, so I would like for Taylor to come out and have her moment." After thanking fans, the singer swiftly moved underground for her special performance in the subway and on top of a taxi in front of the theatre.
Though it took nearly 48 hours to officially give Taylor a call, Kanye finally jotted down her number following her View episode, in which she admitted that she accepted his apology. Only the night before Kanye posted on his blog ("That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry") as well as made an appearance on The Jay Leno Show with more words of apology. Taylor was a bright star during all the media attention and is sure to get much more for her mature attitude and poise, even making People's Best Dressed list for the year for Best Sparkle.
