U2 may be in the midst of arguably one of the biggest rock'n'roll tours to ever trot the globe (the band's current U2 360 Tour is in support of its latest album, No Line On The Horizon) but that doesn't mean the Irish rock band doesn't have other plans lined up in the near future. Along with Laurie Anderson, Antony Hegarty, Rufus Wainwright, Courtney Love and Scarlett Johannson, U2 will take a break from touring to perform at a (RED) Campaign benefit concert at New York's Carnegie Hall on October 4. Billed by producer Hall Willner as "An Evening with Gavin Friday and Friends," the concert is part of the recently founded (RED) Nights concert series.
U2 frontman Bono and songwriter Friday are childhood friends, and Bono was one of the founders of the (RED) initiative, so it is no surprise that U2 decided to take a time out from touring to play at the star-studded event. The (RED) Campaign was launched in 2006 and has created unique product lines with companies like the Gap, Converse, Dell, American Express and others, with proceeds donated to the Global Fund, on organization which seeks to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. (RED) teamed up with Live Nation to host a concert series in June 2009, and acts like Fall Out Boy, O.A.R. and Katy Perry participated this summer. Thievery Corporation, Built To Spill and Ingrid Michaelson are slated to play (RED)-affiliated shows later this fall.
Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, Martha Wainwright, Maria McKee, Lydia Lunch and Eric Mingus will also be featured at the Carnegie Hall event, which will likely see the members of U2 playing with other performers in a one-off setting rather than playing collectively as U2. Director of strategy and entrainment for (RED) recently told Billboard.com, "We aren't after a single demographic. We hope to reach lots of different groups of fans through (RED)Nights and build an ongoing, sustainable way for many artists to bring their fans to (RED). As we begin to have the second and third shows in various cities, we hope that the series will take on a life of its own."
Also lined up for this fall, U2 will release a reissue of the band's iconic 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire. Four versions of the album will arrive via Island/Universal on October 27 in celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Unforgettable Fire. U2 guitarist The Edge helmed the re-mastering duties for the highly-anticipated project, which will include a 180 gram vinyl album version; a standard re-mastered CD version, a deluxe double version that boasts a 35-page bound book; and a limited edition super deluxe box set that includes the two CD version, five portfolio prints, a 56-page bound book and a DVD featuring concert footage, rare videos and a "Making of" documentary of the classic album. Previously unreleased track "Disappearing Act" (aka "White City") will also land on the reissue. U2 originally recorded the song with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois in 1983 and, according to an interview with BBC Radio 1, put the final touches on the song recently in France.
