The Gipsy Kings are currently on tour, promoting their infectious progressive pop-style flamenco ballads to a global audience. The band has come a long way since their days of playing in the small village of Arles, located in Southern France. That was back in the 1970s...but this is now...and the Kings are reigning over a much larger audience than their initial little fanclub which was gaining traction in the small towns and hamlets throughout Spain, but not really anywhere else. The Gipsy Kings were once those dudes that came to play at your wedding nuptials. They branded themselves Los Reyes and became a sort of gypsy band that traveled around the countryside playing at weddings, festivals and other small events. They even took up residence on street corners, playing tunes to the traveling masses scurrying to and from work.
The Gipsy Kings played a traditional and passionate style of flamenco music, which was well received by fans but had hardly gained a global following. Events were about to change that, especially in 1986, when the members first hooked up with acclaimed producer Claude Martinez, who sensed that the Kings had the inner workings that could potentially turn them into rockstars. The following year, the group let loose two songs that would propel them to the front lines in the industry: "Djobi Djoba" and "Bamboleo." Both ballads were smash hits around the world and let the band to ultimately sign with Sony Music.
Their self-titled debut album came right on the heals of the pair of singles and found itself positioned in the Top Ten album charts in 12 European countries; they debuted their work in the United States shortly afterward. Just three years later the Kings schmoozed with some of the globe's most well known stars in the industry at the SRO Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, and thrived off of the success of their debut record, which had spent about 40 weeks on the charts and ultimately went gold.
Since then the Gipsy Kings have kept busy, never missing a beat when it came to releasing new material and planning tour dates. Some of their more notable albums have included: Mosaique, released in 1989; Live! In 1992; Love and Liberte in 1994; Tierra Gitana in 1996 and Roots in 2004. Their most recent album arrived in 2006, just two years after their extraordinary masterpiece, Roots. Pasajero explores the Kings abilities to present big, glossy sound and extravagant production.
It is a musical fusion, bringing together the sounds of drums, percussion, mariachi and traditional flamenco beats; all of this is achieved with the raw and rough vocal arrangements. Tracks on the album include: "Mira La Chica," "Sol y Luna," "Pasajero" and "Recuerdos a Zucarados." The Gipsy Kings are much bigger than the small traveling band that they started out as - they are bigger and bolder than ever.
