Yes, charity begins at home. Keep your vehicle in the right conditions; maintain it well and you will reap the benefits. A properly maintained car will improve your mileage where as a faulty spark plug may overwork it. Always replace faulty parts. It does not take time and saves you money in the log run. It will cost you fifteen minutes to replace a faulty spark plug but it will cost you much more in fuel economy if you do not.

Remember to service your car regularly. Engine tune ups are must. A tuned car gives around 20% better gas mileage than a poorly tuned car.

The tires must always be in the right pressure. Learn reading the pressure chart available with your vehicle, mostly found in the door jam and maintain the tire pressure. It can improve the mileage of your vehicle by up to 3.3%. Low rolling radial tires are considered to be very good at maintaining your engine's work and giving you better mileage.

Always check the alignment of the tires. A poorly aligned set of tires will drag your car unnecessarily and create for resistance for the forward movement of your car. This will eventually result in overwork of your car and then cost you the mileage. You must also rotate your car tires regularly.

"Replace clogged air filters; this can improve your car's gas mileage by as much as 10%, and it will also protect your engine", says the Department of Energy. Always check the oxygen sensors at intervals of 30,000 miles on the road. About 1/3 rd of the vehicles on road requires a change in filter as per one survey.

Use the oil weight as suggested by the manufacturer. You should also pick up energy saving grade of oil to improve engine emission and better mileage. Generally the oil container will have the seal from American Petroleum Institute to indicate the EC grade of the oil. Such oil can improve the gas mileage by 1.5% whereas EC II oil can give about 2.7% better mileage than an EC I oil.

Using the right octane for your car and not going for higher octane necessary for premium vehicles will also help you in getting a better mileage for your car. The University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences says "Some cars will advance their own ignition timing to take advantage of premium fuel. Depending on the type of driving you do, this may result in a small (2-8%) increase in fuel efficiency. Perform a simple test: fill up with regular and check your gas mileage, then fill up with premium and check it again. Be sure the tank is almost empty when filling up with premium so it is not diluted. (If you are building an engine, use a higher compression ratio and premium fuel to increase fuel efficiency.)"

Help your vehicle run in its full potential by maintaining it well and you will give you better performance and fuel economy as well.
